Interoperability is the ability of separate systems to share information and make use of one another’s data. It is one of the oldest challenges in software: systems are often built in isolation, at different times, by different people, and end up “speaking different languages”.
The Flare networks are designed to help applications make sense of information originating outside their own environment, treating interoperability as a core capability.
Two systems can each work perfectly on their own and still be unable to cooperate, simply because they represent information differently or have no agreed way to verify each other’s claims. Bridging that gap reliably — and in a decentralised way, without a trusted middleman — is genuinely hard.
This is where the data protocols come in: they provide agreed, verifiable ways for information to cross from one context into another.
Imagine two libraries with different cataloguing systems. Each works fine internally, but a reader who wants a book listed in both must translate between the two systems. Interoperability is the shared standard that lets them cooperate without a human translator in the middle.
